So long story short, we’ve accustomed ourselves to the idea of living in the country. I’m hoping it won’t be too big of an adjustment since the children and I so rarely leave the house anyway. Right now we’re considering putting in an offer on this house.
It is located in a booming town of about 1500 (for comparison there are around 120,000 in our current town). There are schools in town (Elementary, Intermediate, and High School) so the kids wouldn’t have to bus into somewhere else, which is nice. But there are maybe ten places of business including two pizza places, a café with random hours, two gas stations, a realty office, two hair salons, and a “custom trading co” store. I’m not really sure what they have in there. Church is about a thirty minute drive, which is a bummer, but there is a Super Walmart and various other shopping facilities about 16 miles away. I also located the closest McDonalds, which is in the next biggest town over (of 3600) and a ten minute drive from our prospective new home.
So the new house is a “Victorian” built in 1920 with 3 bedrooms, 2 baths, a living room, dining room, big kitchen (with lots of cupboard space) and a den. There is also an enormous attic that could easily be converted to more living space (we were thinking a couple of bedrooms) bumping the square footage up to about 2500. The two bathrooms are small and dark, which I don’t like, and the kitchen was redecorated in the 80s, which is not so nice, but there are nearly 12 foot ceilings in every room, which is awesome, central air and heat, really well insulated, storm windows, and a detached two car garage and workshop. The house has been on the market for nearly two years now and marked down repeatedly, so we’re hoping the sellers are really eager to get rid of it. There are two magnolia trees in front, a huge pecan in back and a few other smaller ones around the yard. The front of the house has a wrap-around porch and the back has a huge screened porch with ceiling fans. The house does need a little work (though still in far better condition than the last three places we've lived) but can be moved into as is. So we’re thinking of putting in an offer this week and seeing what happens. If everything goes through we’ll be moving sometime after the New Year.
And now for something completely different. Here are a few pics of us this Halloween. We had fun at our wards trunk-or-treat and Isabelle won a prize for most original costume (she was a robot)…oh and in case you were confused; James was dressed as a girl. He didn’t win any prizes. ;)

Wowzers. That house looks pretty good, but I think Patrick should just drive further so you can stay closer to us! :) All I can say as someone who's lived in the country all my life, get used to being the one that has to do the driving, cause NOBODY's EVER willing to drive 30 minutes to see you! Of course, I'd have to drive like an hour to see you, since I'm in the other side of the country. lol. But seriously, that does look like a pretty good house, and I hope that everything works out for the best either way.
The house looks great! What ward would you be in? What would you do with the house you are in now - would you rent it out or sell it? How big are the schools in town? That is a tiny town! So many questions. :)
Margie-
Yeah I was thinking about how we'd have to be the ones to drive everywhere. I said 'well Margie has to drive like 20 minutes to get anywhere and she doesn't seem to care, so maybe it won't be that bad.' Hopefully you guys would come and see us sometime, and vice verse though. :)
Heidi-
We would be in the Sherman 2nd ward about 26 minutes away (even though the Gainesville one is closer at only 20 min in the opposite direction). The three schools in town each seem to have approximately 300 students. I don't know if that means there is only one teacher per grade or what. I didn't see any school websites to look at. We haven't decided what we'd do with our current house. I'm kind of thinking we should sell it since we couldn't afford to pay two mortgages if there were some months it was sitting empty, but I think Patrick is leaning towards renting it for the extra couple of hundred we'd get a month. So who knows.
Wow - it's a really nice home! I know the town's size would be a bit of a change, but you come from a small (though not that small) town so it won't be too big of a culture shock, hopefully. At least you have stores that are nearby! And, you'd get to see Patrick more, which is a huge bonus!! Good luck with this decision!
Isabelle looks awesome...and your hair got so green!
Haha, something completely different.
I hope you guys get the house, if you decided to do it.
I love Isabel's costume! The house looks great to, I hate any commuting time so closer always is better for me.
james could totally be a girl.
I feel like I'm just now catching up on writing/reading blogs. Good luck with everything! I know at this point you've submitted an offer, so that must mean you decided to go for it. I imagine it'll be accepted since it's been sitting vacant for 2 years. I know if Cesar had his way, WE'D live in a small town with big trees and a bigger yard, but it would be hard to give up some conveniences. Does sound like the town has the basics covered, though. Keep us posted!
Did you put in a bid? The suspense is killing me!!!
we did but we're still waiting to hear back.
